First Issue - purchased an 'Aluratek' 10 port USB hub. (#1210F). connected to system, Windows created a new local area connection. So far, so good. Plugged in a basic webcam to test the hub. Webcam does not show up in 'My Computer'. Removed hub from circuit. Plugged webcam directly into USB port, webcam is seen by XP, works fine. Tested each port on the hub, same result. My conclusion? A bum USB hub (tried other USB devices with same results).

Second Issue - Purchased an Aluratek 4-Port USB Hub (#1304F), connected to system USB port, then the webcam, no problems, everything works.

NOW for the tricky part: I ran additional USB cables from 2 other systems (one XP, one Win7) TO the new hub (which is working), but cannot 'see' the webcam which is plugged directly into the hub (not the host system). Shouldn't those other systems be able to recognize a webcam (or any device) which is plugged into the hub?

No drivers needed for this hub, and would appreciate any input on this before I begin ripping my hair out.

Many thanks! :)

You can't share devices in that manner via USB. The device must be connected to each computer separately. Or, if possible, set up as a shared network resource.

Are these powered hubs (meaning they have their own separate power supply) or are they powered by the host port? If not powered, the camera could very well be drawing more power than the hub can supply. It's always best to use powered hubs.

Secondly, you cannot connect additional computers to a hub and expect to share the connections. USB hubs don't work that way.

Both hubs have their own power adapter. As for the additional systems being connected, my intention is to only 'share' the device with one system at a time, not simultaneously.

ps - as a former NAVSEASYSCOM alumnus, I like your tagline! ;-)
