Hi people, I'm very new to the forums so if I've put this thread in the wrong place I'm sorry :p

Anyways onto my question. For my birthday I bought a pc which is fairly good,
Specs:
Mobo: ASUS Sabertooth 990fx r2.0 (pice 2.0)
CPU:AMD FX 8350 overclocked to 4.2ghz
CPU Cooler : Corsair h80 closed loop water cooler
PSU: Corsair CX600m power supply (600w)
Storage: standard 1.5tb 7200 rpm drive + soon to be ROG Raidr :D
Current Gpu:* sapphire ATI Radeon 5670

So, I now have accumulated enough money to buy a gtx 780 which is quite a beasty card but it seems in only a few weeks rumors have rised since ces 2014 that the maxwell gpu's will be released in q1 2014. So I would like to know if there would likely be a big performance/ price difference and if it is overall worth waiting for

Thanks in advance for your answers :)

The 20nm Maxwells will most likely not be released in Q1 due to bad yields. The 28nm Maxwells are the most likely to make an appearance (if there is any appearance at all), and it's *speculated* that these will be updates to the 760 and 770 cards, and the "880"/"880 Ti" variants will come on the 20nm process.

This is *entirely* speculation and hearsay though. If you're really worried about it, get a 780 from EVGA. They have a Trade Up program that lets you trade up if a new card comes out in 90 days and just pay the difference.
Q1 2014 I very much doubt, the current 700 series provides ample competition for AMD's cards, and I'm sure the 780's are still selling like hotcakes. If you are desperate for an upgrade, then why not go for it, if you can live with what you have a while longer, then maybe wait for Maxwell, just don't expect it to be cheap.

Maxwell will certainly not be released in q1, just letting you know that. maybe late q2 to as late as q4. The 780 is a great card, and honestly is just a pretty good deal right now. Also you will be able to buy a second one for a fairly respectable performance jump by the time a single 780 begins to have troubles with games. OR you could wait another little while and just sock away a couple hundred more for the 780ti, as it is kind of in a class of it's own right now, and since it is more powerful, is obviously more "futureproof". also the performance jump expected from maxwell is not going to be any more than the 600 series was to the 700 series, if not even less due to the limitations of technology

The new Maxwell GPU's will certainly cost a lot more than the current Keplar GPU's do now because they will be brand new, have a bunch of extra cool features, and will be in high demand. While they will be very powerful and have a host of cool add-ons (better Advanced PhysX that doesn't reduce performance, rumored dedicated CPU for such tasks and other things, etc.), you will need to decide if these features make it worth buying the new line of GPUs. I would recommend waiting until the 800 line have an official release date, decide if you can wait that long, and then look at the specs and pricing to see if it is worth it or not.

Yeah, with the money nvidia is making on their high end cards upon release, you'd have to wait until very late this year to even be able to afford the flagship card, which will only be beaten a few months later by either an amd card, or another nvidia card...it's a viscous market lol

If the rumor specs are correct, then yes, Maxwell will have a respectable performance increase. Prices should follow NVIDIA's current model, no surprise there. Expect to pay $600+ for an 880. This is mostly speculation though. Expect to see Maxwell surface late February/early March.
