Upgrading from two XFX 5970 Black Editions to newer single card under $500

During FPS game play I observe some stuttering, usually when rotating view around the border of two areas.

The machine is mildly dated - i7 950, 12 GB RAM, single WD velociraptor with the two XFX HD5970 Black cards. I am about to change out the hard disk to an SSD - which will help overall performance - but not sure it will help the stuttering.

Going back to a single card, is there a single card under $500 that will give me a very noticeable boost, or should I wait until another generation is released?

Thanks

Under $500? You could very well get a high end card. Only thing I'm uncertain of is whether or not your CPU will bottleneck or not. I want to say that it won't cause much of a bottleneck, but I could be wrong.

If you could apply a decent overclock to the CPU, you could likely get away with running a GTX 780.

Not sure about the CPU / mainboard bottleneck myself. It's a first-gen Socket 1366 mainboard, Intel X58 chipset.

It's at least 3 if not pushing 4 years old so it's likely that very many newer boards move data more quickly than this one.
