Hi guys,

Trying to type this frustrated is difficult so bear with me if I sound incoherent.

I'm doing my first-ish build from scratch, and so far, let me tell you, it's been a complete disaster.

I purchased an Asus Z87-A motherboard and an i7-4770K Intel Core Processor, an Ultra 750W ATX power supply (Bronze Plus) and 8gb (2x 4gb) Vengeance Corsair RAM 1600 MHz. To check if the components function before I put everything in the box, I attempted to boot with the essential components outside.

I inserted the CPU (being extremely careful not to bend pins and such and not putting any downward force and shut the latch). I inserted the ram and put all the PSU plugs required (primary the smaller 8-pin secondary slot and the 24or28pin bigger one). Instead of putting in my video card, I ran a DVI cable from my motherboard to my older Dell screen…

and guess what? I can't even boot. Can't even get to or see BIOS. At all. I've already RMAed a previous set of CPU and MOBO back because I thought that one of the pieces was not working.

Here's what I do know // what I have done.

1. The screen and DVI cable function (I've tested them on an alternate computer).
2. Considering I have 2 sticks of 4gb ram, I've tried to start up with 2 sticks in both the yellow slots, 2 sticks in the black slots, 1 stick in the DIMM_A2 slot (that default slot for 1 memory module), 1 stick in the DIMM_A1 slot. NOTHING.
3. I've rotated RAM sticks thinking "they both can't be dysfunctional". Nothing.

In terms of start ups, When I short-circuit the two power-up pins, all I get is my PSU and CPU fan start spinning for roughly 3-5 seconds, then it seems like it re-sets. Every time is does reset, the red CPU_LED light on the Motherboard flashes momentarily.

I've re-seated the CPU chip also. No pins were bent and I was very VERY careful not to touch any of the pins or the underpart of the CPU.

Guys, please help a brother out. I'm just losing my mind here. I feel like I'm doing things right, yet I cannot even get to BIOS.

I really appreciate any help I could get.

The only resolution supported by UEFI BIOS is 1280X1024. If for some reason your GPU and TV/monitor don't have that resolution, you'll see the splash screen but either get a garbled display or no display in UEFI.

You also need a heatsink and fan installed on the CPU.

I was using a modern screen that is capable of that resolution. There was simply no start up. The fans on my stock fan (from the i7-4770K) and on my PSU would run for 3-5 seconds, then wind down and it seems like it would reboot.

I also tried just plugging in an old school DVI cable into the MOBO directly, without a gpu, same shenanigans. Nothing at all appears on the screen. As Anonymous1 said, I'm going to try and get a new PSU and see if that's the issue.

When you say that I need a heatsink installed on the CPU, I'm simply using the stock fan for now. Is that ok?

Silly question but not one that is out of place - are the DRAM modules latched in on both sides? Some users get caught out by the EZ-slots, and don't insert the modules til they click in on both sides of the slot..
