I have a 500GB HDD where my current OS is installed, along with some movies; I also have a 1TB HDD for most of my storage i.e: video game installs, movies, music, etc. There is a single partition on both drives as in the 500GB has a partition and the 1TB has a partition. I want to utilize a RAID setup that improves hard drive access times and hopefully there is one that there isn't too big a chance of hard drive failure. I am not sure how the different modes correlate with a higher or lower chance of failure nor which configuration would increase performance. Both HDDs are 7200 RPM and capable of SATA III 6GB/s transfer speeds.

Sorry if my lingo isn't completely understandable in terms of computer talk. Any help is appreciated.

RAID 0 - faster access time
RAID 1 - redundant (mostly)

With either, the array size is limited to the size of the smallest drive in the array. In this case, the 500GB.

With normal desktop and home use, RAID is far more hassle and fail prone than just regular drives.
A MUCH better solution would be a 120GB or larger SSD. OS and applications. Way faster than a HDD RAID array.
