I've been using my external hard drive for years and it has a lot of info on it. It has a USB 2.0 plug on it but my desktop has both 2.0 and 3.0. I plugged it in the 3.0 and one point and then also the 2.0 etc. Now when I plug it in to any USB port (2.0/3.0 and tries on windows 8 and 7) it says last time device was plugged it malfunctioned and can not be opened. I've tried uninstalling all the drivers in device manager and also tried updating. Nothing is working... Please help! I need the files off of there! Does it have anything to do with USB 2.0/3.0 anything?
USB 2.0/3.0 problem? External hard drive stopped working.

Well, first and foremost, have you tried the drive on another computer? Or use a different drive on the comupter's ports to test them out?
I've tried it on my desktop (windows 8) and my laptop (windows 7). I've tried other external hard drives and some give the error message or are not recognized at all. It does the same on my laptop. I wasn't sure if it is because they're older drives? The ports work on both my desktop and laptop (mouse, key board, etc), I plugged something in all of them and they work fine.
