When i went to turn on my pc this afternoon after school it was bad news. All the fans and the lights on the motherboard turn on. My motherboard is an asrock extreme 4 970. My GPU is a XFX radeon HD 7870. The problem is that it doesnt display on the monitor. Everything worked the day before, but it wont work today. I've unplugged the GPU and tried booting on with only 1 stick of ram inside. I will be try removing all the components then re-install them tomorrow. Please help it would be much appreciated. Also power button will turn on pc, but wont turn off pc now.

If the GPU is dead, it should give a series of long annoying beeps.

If it doesn't beep, it's potentially the motherboard. Could more likely be the power supply though, they seem to fail often.

Make sure your monitor cords are plugged in good. Also, unplug the monitor, hold down the power button for a few seconds and plug it back in.

Do you have a case speaker in your computer?

You can get a case speaker anywhere for a few dollars. Amazon used to carry them, or possibly your local computer repair store - the usually have broken computers around and you may can salvage one

On most modern motherboards, it should be built in. If the fans are just humming at a constant speed and the cpu and HD aren't loading, than there is a problem with the motherboard,

If the system is booting without any issue but the monitor is black, it's probably something stupid, like the cable is unplugged or the monitor is set to the wrong input.

Would do you mean by not loading? Also when i turn the cpu fan speed control on my case that is a nzxt phantom 410. The Leds get brighter when you turn it up, but the fan speeds don't appear to change.

It might very well be the GPU. Do you have an old GPU to try?

Otherwise pick up a case speaker and see if it beeps at you.

The Beeps codes will tell you exactly what the issue is. If you pull the GPU it should beep.

If you have an onboard videocard, you can try using that.

What kind of beeps should i expect if the gpu has failed? Also what beeps to expect if the gpu is still working.

GPU not detected should be 3 or 4 longs beeps.

Should do 1 short beep if it's loading without any issues, in which case it's not the motherboard .

You'll need to check the manual for any other beep codes, I think 3 short beeps is RAM or CPU.
