I have had a single GTX 660 running fine for about a month now and mustered up the money for a second to run SLI. However upon doing this and turning my machine on, the screen flickered a few times and I heard my speakers make a funny noise and now my RealTek sound manager no longer recognizes any audio device being plugged in.
Essentially, my PC no longer recognizes a speaker plugged in via any audio jack.
it says the Digital (optical) jack is running and the Digital jack is running but the speaker is greyed out and will not let me test/select/set as default. (Control Panel)

I have searched for hours on forums with many similar problems for troubleshooting and did the following:

Reinstalled Realtek, video, and motherboard drivers from scratch.
rebooted several times in the process, testing between intervals.
Took out 2nd card and now running on original - still no sound.
I am still only running with one video card to remedy the issue.
disabled and enabled all sound (nvidia HD outputs included) in every combination possible.
unplugged HDMI monitor and rebooting using DVI-D- still no sound

My only guesses are that the video card is overriding the sound with the HDMI slot, the drivers got trashed within windows 7 registry (i reinstalled all drivers), or the motherboard got fried somehow and trashed the sound chip.

Many people have posted questions about this, but still no real answer has posted. The only thing people have done is RMA their boards. Some had luck and some didn't.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have been pounding my head for 2 days with this problem.

Is your Realtek sound card set a s "Default playback device" in Control Panel/Hardware and sound/Sound ? Did you try to custom install your nVidia drivers and unselect the hdmi audio driver?

after reinstalling nvidia drivers with clean installation and removing the HD audio driver, all it lists in the sound settings is :
speakers (not plugged in)
Realtek Digital ouput
realtek digital output (optical)

What used to happen is that I could plug in any headphones/speakers and the ASUS sound manager would pop up and recognize what i plugged in, now nothing happens and windows recognizes nothing and ASUS recognizes nothing. ASUS recommends reinstalling windows...

well, for me, adding extra hardware(or new hardware) always comes with a fresh install of Windows... (unless it is a sound card or extra network adapter, etc).
Try it out with a fresh install of Windows, with all the inconveniences of it :p

Alright, I may have to do that then... My father did warn me about this. Thank you for the advice and the quick reply, It made me feel like I wasn't as alone as I thought I was!! For completion of the thread's sake, I'll update any findings once I reinstall windows :(  .

Best regards,

The problem I've seen most often, folks plug in the second card and don't CAREFULLY check clearance to the audio cable running to the front panel of the computer. They therefore short out the audio circuitry and sound works no more....

Sound chips & connectors are at Left Rear corner of the motherboard in most situations.......

ew. I see. Is this like a USB port? maybe it can reset itself? I did locate the sound chip exactly where you have indicated. What I find odd is that it did play the windows "log-on" tone before my sound kicked the bucket. I am normally careful when inserting new devices and that may have well happened.

Has this become a RMA situation?

Thank you for the time and help,

-Chris

I'd sure give RMA a try if you have warranty left. Else, get an add-in sound card....
