Solution
I have a Sapphire Tri-X 290 and was having the same problem.
I loaded up Afterburner and noticed that the memory clock was jumping between 1300mhz and whatever the idle clock is.

Turns out it was Windows 7 Aero causing the memory clock to jump around so I turned Aero off and I have had a black screen since.

ToKyo_JP, I have a Sapphire Tri-X R9 290, got it this morning, it's black screening all over the place. My computer was fine before installing the new card. RMA'ing it tomorrow.

Just to confirm have you put a 6 AND an 8 pin power supply in to it? What power pack (PSU) are you using? My Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X is fine and have been running like a dream for several days. Also you may as well list rest of your rig.

Yes I plugged in a 6 and 8 pin power cable to it. I sent it back this morning, but just for interest, here's the rest of my machine:

Motherboard: MSI P67A-GD53 DDR3
CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K 3.30GHz Sandybridge
RAM: Corsair 16GB 1600MHz CL10 DDR3 Vengeance
PSU: XFX 750W XXX Edition Modular '80 Plus Silver' Power Supply
Case: Cooler Master HAF X
Sound Card: Asus Xonar D1
OS: Windows 7

Wasn't an answer in my situation - my monitors don't have HDMI ports. However, I solved the problem. I bought a new card, and am using the '13.11 Beta 9.5' drivers, no black screens anymore
