Missing one heatsink on GPU

A friend had given me two GeForce 8800 gtx with after market cooling systems and I was going to use them both to take advantage of SLI. When I was looking closer at one of the cards I noticed one of the chips was missing a heatsink. It is the bottom right chip which I believe is a memory chip but I really don't know. My question is will it still be safe to use even if one of the chips does not have a heatsink on it?

Solution

You can still use the card. I am just saying that there are higher chances of the chip burning out if you put too much load on it without a heat sink. Chips get too hot while using them. Heat sink helps them to keep cool. :)

Its not the whole cards heatsink just one of the memory chips. Like the heatsink and fan is on the card itself but the bottom right chip does not have an aluminum heatsink like the rest.

The aluminium part is the actual conductor. It dissipates heat from the chip with help of the fan. However, give it a try once. See if the fans are working correct. Check the temperature difference between both the cards usinh HW Monitor software. If its huge you'll have to get a third party heat sink.

Okay I'll try this out. Thank you for the quick answer but what I'm not understanding is if the card did not come with those conductors in the first place why are they needed?

You said that the heat sink is missing so I assumed that it got lost or it broke off and wasn't handed over to you by your friend. Are the two 8800GTX of the same company/brand/make/model? Does the good fab have a heatsink in place where other one does not? If so, then the heat sink from other card is probably lost.

Sorry for being unclear I'm kind of new to this kind of thing. Both of the cards are identical. They both have the same third party heat sink fan installed. Just for one of the cards the aluminum conductor is missing on the black square chip where there is one on the other card. All the other chips have one except the one on the bottem right.

That's what I understood from beginning. The reason is the heat sink "broke" off and fell somewhere and is lost now. You can ask your friend to look for it once in his case or house. If has it you can place it back, if he does not, you need to get another heat sink.

Just because the one is missing means the whole GPU is unusable? That's so crazy. The fans alone wouldn't be able to keep the chips cooled? Also I thought that cards came stock without those aluminum conductors in the first place. I wish I could upload a picture of it so you can see exactly what I'm talking about.

i really dont think your going to find an aftermarket one anywhere, but i do believe you should have one.if you know anyone who has a dead video card you may find something you can use there.as matter of fact ive thrown away parts with heatsinks on them.i would make it work.

Okay cool. If I was to use the card it wouldn't cause any damage to motherboard to PCI slot right?

Okay thank you so much. I extremely appreciate it. You were extremely helpful!
