Inconsistent network speeds

The way this whole thing came about, is that I am trying to set up my Raspberry Pi and XBMC. I've got a desktop in the next room which is acting as a server, and hosting all of my media. I am getting terrible network speeds from my desktop, and can't figure out why.

When I try to watch a movie on the pi, it is stuttering and freezing. I know it's a network issue, because local media will play just fine. Also, if I run a speed test on the desktop at the time of the playback issues, I get super slow results (around 1mb/s)

When I run a speed test on my desktop (speedtest.net), I get real inconsistent results, anywhere from 1-6 mb/s. I can run the same test on my laptop anywhere in my house, and consistently get 15-18 mb/s. The desktop is connected to the network through an Asus USB-N10 network adapter, and I thought maybe that was the issue, but when I connect that same adapter to my laptop and connect through it, I still get 15-18 mb/s, and also when I am hardwired with the laptop and ethernet cable, the same 15-18.

I tried the network adapter in every different USB port of the desktop w/ no noticeable change. Also using the latest driver for the adapter. Firmware on my router (WRT54G) is also freshly updated.

It's something to do with the desktop. Desktop is running a fairly fresh build of Windows 7, while the laptop is Windows 8.

This is driving me crazy, any ideas?

Unfortunately I don't have a cord long enough to reach. And while this may fix the problem, it would require me to have ethernet cable running across my floor, which just really isn't an option. Even if it did work, I'm still confused how the same network adapter could provide such different speeds on two different computer. Both computers same distance from router, and both in usb 2.0 ports.

Well, I'm not going to say for sure, but I think I figured it out. In my router settings, I changed from mixed mode (b/g) to just running on g, and instantly my desktop speeds are fairly consistent with the laptop speeds...I will keep testing to see if it's not just a fluke.

The issue is still not resolved...right back to where I was before. Still consistently getting 16-18 mbps on the laptop, anywhere in the house, whether using the internal wireless or the USB-N10. Desktop speeds still reading anywhere from 2-9...seems to have increased slightly, but nowhere near the speeds of the laptop.

Good suggestion. I do run with avast anti-virus, and spybot, unfortunately same results with them both turned off.

I also tried booting into safe mode with networking and get the same results.

Just an update...Did a fresh install of Windows, this time to Windows 8.1, and it seems like speeds have increased to 10-11 mbps on average. The quest continues to match the 16-18 of the other computer!
