I want to build a home multimedia centre to store all my movies and music. Currently I have about 400 movies and 80gigabyte of music. I want to build a pc with Raid; (probably raid 2). I know that I will have to change my hard drives every few years. It will be more like a home server and I will be connecting to it wirelessly also. Should have HDMI out and will be connected to the internet for remote access. Can you suggest an Operating System (don’t mind XP as it’s quite stable) and best mother board etc. I’ll also be adding movies and music quite regularly. This system will be running 24 7.

This is my media server.

Server 2012 R2 x64
AMD Phenom II x4 840
8GB DDR3-1333
2xIntel 1Gigabit Nics set for load balancing.
64 GB SSD for OS and additional software.
Plex Media Server software
4TB Raid 10 storage

My media server than can handle 4 HD video streams, music streaming, photo streaming through my AC router and also provide external streaming to Plex based web players or Plex Home Theatre for PC's or IOS/Android apps for handhelds.

thanks for the information.
how easy is it if you wanted to change you hard drives... say after 3 years. Do you change one and manually copy data from one to the other then change the other and do the same, or does the system automatically duplicate the data when it senses that one drive is empty.

400x movies I assume you have 720p and 1080p video and it's average about 7GB per movies, then you need 3TB at least.
Then XP wont works, It's only see up to 2TB... Go with Win7, add UMS app to it...
You can use this as Media Center and Media Server

Now you can watching movie ANYWHERE local or aboard via your iPhone, iPad, Android devices as long as you have internet connection
Using any MB with I3 CPU would do plenty for 1/2 stream encode on fly
You can change the CPU as you need, just remember the more powerful CPU, the more power consumed, but it can stream to more devices
