Hi , I have built a PC with a FX 6300 processor and a ASUS M597 2.0 Board. This processor is probably the best value you can get right now , but I have some games where cannot reach 60 FPS and it's a litte bit annoying.

Do you think an aftermarket cooler will be a good upgrade or I'd be better saving that money for a new platform? How much extra performance can I get from this processor with some mild oc?

Depending on what games you are playing, the issue may be with your GTX 760 not having enough power and not the CPU.

The FX6300 is a great CPU. In most recent games it performs between the I3 and I5. In the heavily threaded games (BF3/4, Crysis 3) the FX6300 will easily run with a SB I5.

As for overclocking, with a decent cooler (about $35), you can easily hit the upper mid 4Ghz range. I had my 6300 @ 5Ghz using a CM Hyper 212 Evo in push/pull.
the overclock is a much more affordable idea. you could try even with the stock cooler and monitor the temperatures if you're below 65-70C it would be great. the speed improvement (if the bottleneck is because of the cpu) will be percentage equal to the overclock. (so if you go from 3.5 to 4ghz it's a 14% increase in performance)
