Hi,

I'm having a prob with this new Mobo I bought from newegg. seems this is a newer motherboard cause I can't find any reviews or tech help on the internet.

Anyways.... I'm not getting a display when I boot the system up UNLESS i clear the cmos.

here's the rotation of my prob.

I boot it up, i have no display, but the pc is on and fans are running with no lights on keyboard. I turn it off, goto boot it up again and have no display. clear the cmos and I boot it up and have display on my monitor again.

when I do a restart do to installing drivers etc... I get no display and have to do the whole rotation over again. this is EVERYTIME I do a restart or turn off my system.

I have discovered that I don't have this display prob when I disconnect my hard drive. of course I can only get into the bios, but I don't have to clear the cmos anymore to get a display on my monitor.

I called asrock tech support and he had me do some tests and discovered the hard drive trick. we tried everything with taking out ram slots, switching ram slots etc, switching the graphics card to another PCI slot, tried loading default settings in bios.....nothing fixed it unless we unplugged the hard drive. once the hard drive was unplugged it would let me reboot without having to clear the cmos to get a display on my monitor.

I have a kingston SSD 120 gig hard drive, gigabyte gtx 650ti graphics card and installed in the first slot, 8 gigs of corsair vengeance 1333 in the 1 and 2 slots, fx6300 cou, corsair hx750 PSU.

Hopefully I provided enough info for someone to help me out with this prob. btw... I did nothing in the bios of overclocking or messing with the default settings.

thanks in advance,
Chris

Have you tried any of the following:

Plugging your HDD into a different SATA(?) port
Using a different SATA(?) cable to connect your HDD
Connecting a different HDD with the same SATA(?) cable connected to the same SATA(?) port that is giving you trouble right now

Thanks for the responses guys. I will try both of those options when I get home tonight. I'm at work right now. P.s. I'm not quite sure how to switch the modes in the bios. Any help on that would be great! Again... thank yous. also, how do I know what mode my hard drive is? I am kind of new to building systems with ssd's. :(

Well, unless you are going in and changing the BIOS settings after you do a reset then I would say the problem is either the HDD or the SATA cable, and testing that is obviously conducted by trying a different cable followed by a different HDD.

If you ARE making changes to the BIOS then ben1966's suggestion is a great place to start.

I haven't touched anything in the bios and I used one of the brand new cables from the asrock mobo accessories. Not saying It can't be the cable, but I highly doubt it. Either way I will try a diff cable and see what that does, but I did order another hard drive from new egg (10,000 Rpm 250 gig velocity raptor. I'm not quite experienced enough with ssd's yet to be only using them on my builds. I'd rather stay with what I know for building and reformatting and keeping the ssd to play around with when I have the time while still having my pc up and running. I'll post and let ya'll know how the cable switch goes. Thanks!

Ben.... you are a genius! I fooled around in the bios cause my hard drive was fine with my gigabyte mobo and it just seemed like a setting in the bios the whole time. I switched the mode to IDE and it fixed it. Thank the both of yous so much. Question solved!

Not sure Falcon... I guess it has to do with what Ben said with the particular mode the hard drive is in compared to what you mode your bios is booting up in. I'd certainly wait for Ben to reply on this one as for I'm not sure why that would cause no display. All I know is it did fix my prob.

That is incredibly strange. You typically want to run any SATA HDD in AHCI mode, especially if you are running windows Vista or later. IDE is a legacy mode added as an option in BIOS to allow legacy operating systems (XP or earlier) to find the drive without having to do an F6 driver insertion.

The main differences between the two modes is that AHCI enables the SATA hotswap functionality and Native Command Queuing (NCQ), hich can yield performance improvements. IDE mode does not have the option for either of these two functions to be enabled.

You can read more here.

Isaiah... I'm baffled than as to why that switch worked, but it did. Thats the only thing I did in the bios. *scratches head* do you think I should contact asrock about this? And will I lose any performance over this switch?

I must say asrock's support is amazing. The tech guy is gonna go get a Kingston ssd and do some testing on the same mobo as mine as well as the same parts and im supposed to call him back in a few hours to see why ide mode is working, and why it isn't working in ahci mode. So I'll let everyone know what's up with this weird problem I'm having in a few hours.

No falcon, I had this drive on my other system with a gigabyte mobo. And yes... dummy me forgot to uninstall the gigabyte mobo drivers before hooking it up to my new asrock mobo, but.... I did goto do a reformat before booting up the new setup. so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it or not.

So, the OS on your boot drive has to be installed in the same mode (AHCI or IDE) that your BIOS is set to. i.e. If you simply swapped out your motherboard, keeping all other parts the same, and tried to boot to the same drive then you could have issues if the old (Gigabyte?) board was set to IDE mode and the new (ASRock) board was set to AHCI.

The other key difference between AHCI and IDE (I forgot you had a SSD involved here) is that I recall reading that installing a SSD with the BIOS set to IDE mode also disables some critical SSD functions like the TRIM command, which wipes deleted data in the background during non-busy cycles. I don't have a link to a supporting document right now, but I've always read that you never want to install a SSD in IDE mode.

I see. So in other words, my gigabyte mobo was probably set to ide mode when I first got the hard drive and did the windows 7 install, so it installed the ssd in ide mode as well. That said, switching the hard drive from an ide mode motherboard to an ahci motherboard caused some problems. Makes sense now. So if I use this parted magic or part magic (whatever it's called) will this set the ssd back to a factory state so I can install to the asrock ahci mode?

Also, basically what your saying is it is imperative to make sure the ssd runs in ahci mode or it will just keep accumulating garbage on the hard drive? Thats good to know. Btw... I did want to thank you again for all your help. I'm learning a lot about ssd's and other important things about building pc's. I love learning about this stuff. :)

This was substantial detail to leave out. Your post prior make it appear to be a new build with a new drive. Can't leave important details like that out when your troubleshooting. Everything can matter.

I do apologize as I realize that now. However... I have ADD and my attention to detail and focus isn't always the best. I thought I covered all my grounds when I posted this thread.

Well... did the parted magic on my SSD and it was fail. still no display after reboots unless in IDE mode. I'm going to try my velociraptor tonight when I get off work. Glad it came today.
