Alright so recently got a Corsair H100i Water Cooler for Christmas, and upon first installing it I used the vertical line method. When I booted up the computer I ran HWMonitor for temps of the cpu as well as used the corsair link software. Both programs were reading the same stats which were about 40 Celsius at 30% load, apparently the idle percentage at the time. Then during prime95 testing for about 30-45 minutes it was reaching temps of 70 Celsius. This was all done at the stock setting of cpu. 3.4 GHz that would turbo itself to 3.8 GHz. Prime95 was running the cpu at 3.6. So out of curiosity I pushed the cpu to 4.0 GHz and left the voltage the same. After 15 minutes of Prime95 it was around 80 Celsius. I then stopped reset the cpu settings and shut the computer down for the night. This morning I decided to reinstall the Water Cooler to see if that was my problem. Upon reinstalling I used the dot method and got a little better idling temps. They run at 33 Celsius at 0-4% load. But when I ran Prime95 again at stock cpu with the two stock fans running 2000rpm in push configuration I once again ran into my problem. Stock temps were maxing at 74 Celsius after 15 minutes of testing and staying consistent at 70 Celsius.

Like mentioned briefly above. The setup is a push configuration with their stock SP fans running at 2000 rpm. Then a 200mm intake fan for chasis and 120mm exhaust fan for chasis. Tubing at pump is kinda warm, not by any means hot, and i have reseated the Water Cooler once already. The only thing I can think of is that I need to get two more fans for push-pull maybe, and/or when installing the backplate with the double sided screws (whatever they are called i forget) it was loose but now that it is all together it is solid and firm.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. I am aiming for between a 4.2 and 4.5 overclock as I have seen many people achieve this with my setup.

2 extra fans will not make a drastic difference, and those load temps are actually quite bad even for a decent air cooler at stock speeds. What thermal paste are you using? I'd take a guess and say either you're using too much or too little or its not spreading too well...

I think I agree with you, I am using artic silver 5. When I pulled it off the first time, the paste did not cover the entire surface of the cpu, probably closer to 2/3 of it. I am also having trouble with the heatsink of the WC itself. When I removed the stock paste from it, it left this black crap that is not extremely noticable and I can still see the copper. But it is on the entire heatsink of the Cooler and doesnt want to come off. I am going to store today to buy some 91 isopropyl alcohol instead of the 70 that I have been using, along with some coffee filters rather than paper towels.

Alright so I got it fixed. The problem I am certain was the looseness of the backplate. I went to my local home improvement store (Lowes), should be able to find this at any home improvement store, and bought myself some rubber grommets that fit my backplate. So far I have been running Prime95 while watching twitch and my temps are floating around 47 Celsius, down from 70-75 Celsius which is an enormous improvement. I will be overclocking later tonight.

For anyone who buys a Corsair H100i make sure your backplate is secure and tight prior to mounting the heatsink/pump to your CPU. If you dont you will be getting higher temps and not getting the most out of your cooler.
