Hard drive no longer recognized in bios/windows but shows during boot

My in-laws picked up a free Dell Precision T7400 from work to use at home. It was just missing a hard drive, so I had them order a Seagate 2tb drive and installed it for them.

I put windows on and everything was all set, until suddenly it wouldn't recognize the hard drive on boot. It throws an error that there is no boot drive, and the BIOS does not recognize any devices plugged in via SATA.

The weird thing is that, after first turning on the PC, one of the boot screens shows the drive as a recognized device. But after that (in bios, trying to boot into windows, etc) the drive doesn't exist.

I've got the drive plugged into another computer right now and it is recognizing it just fine.

Unfortunately, it failed right on my way out the door and I wasn't able to de-bug it for them. What's the likely culprit here? Bad sata cable? Bad motherboard? Bad drive? Or just some configuration snafu?
