I'm about to buy a new PSU and have decided on the
XFX ProSeries Black Edition.

Currently on Novatech, the XFX ProSeries 850W Black Edition is £116.99 and the 750W counterpart is £119.98.
Now I know I don't really need 850W, but as its weirdly cheaper then the 750W version, is there any valid reason that I don't know about for me not to go ahead and buy it?

Solution

Ok then - let me spell it out for you... You can't possibly buy a better PSU than a gold/platinum rated seasonic.

There is no good reason you should hesitate to buy it, provided it fits your needs in wattage etc.

Are you expecting people to jump on the forum and tell you it's a lemon and not to buy it? I see component prices jump up and down all the time. It's quite common to find a better graphics card for cheaper than a lesser one.

Back to my original statement - if its the gold rated seasonic, you would be hard pressed to beat it.

Needless to say a 750W XFX black could be had here for 79$ after MIR a couple weeks ago.

I just bought a...

If that the is gold rated model made by Seasonic, it is a very good PSU - I dare say top of the line. That is plenty of PSU to grow on and could easily support a sli/crossfire setup in the future.

If you are running a single graphics card setup a good brand 650W would be plenty though. Food for thought.

I just bought a seasonic platinum 660W PSU for 79$ myself.

Buy I don't understand you limey's british pounds, dry sense or humor, nor your metric system.

Hope that helps some ;)

Wasn't trying to be a d**k, just curious as to whether the 750W version might be a better performer then the 850W. Sounds stupid I know but I'm a bit of a noob on PSU's.

They are both very solid performing PSUs.

If you really want to get to the knitty-gritty, most PSUs provide optimal efficiency at around 50% load. "around" being the key word, as electricity is not an exact science. The two XFX PSUs in question are no exception:

Given the price difference you are quoting, I would personally go with the 850. If you are running a single GPU setup, the 750 might be slightly better in terms of efficiency, but the difference would be hardly measurable.

The 850 would offer a couple benefits, being 1) The option to sli and overclock two very high end graphics cards with room to spare, and 2) theoretically power supplies degrade over time. Having a higher wattage PSU may offer more in terms of longevity, although regardless PSUs don't last forever, and you really don't want to push a PSU until it eventually breaks - as it may take other system components with it.

Not trying to be rude either - hopefully that helps a little.

Wow! Thanks for the comprehensive answer. Actually that's exactly what I wanted to know.I will go for the 850 then. I have a GTX 780Ti & i5 4670K setup, and may need the extra power if i go SLi in the future.
