Straight to the point.

On July of 2012, yes, 2012. I bought this product for $46.99:

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL
Item #: N82E16820231428
Memory Standard Return Policy

The exact same item based on my newegg history, has a retail price of $84.99 right now (January 2014):

Why has the price changed so much for the exact same product?

Solution

It's definitely my response, DDR3 prices have gone up, and stayed up, since around June of 2013 right after a bunch of typhoons struck throughout the pacific. DDR4 won't even hit mainstream until next year.

Areyou sure? I read that those incidents impacted mostly the prices of HDD's from Seagate and Western Digital.

I re-read my original comment, and don't want to sound like a greedy asshole, I mean, a lot of poor kids work manufacturing these types of hardware to keep costs down, and all. So I hope firo40's answer is more accurate :(
