Hey guys, I recently just bought a Nvidia GT 640 (which is coming tomorrow) and I have some questions.
Seeing that it said I need a 350 watt power, I stupidly didn't check and assumed I had it and bought it anyway. I opened my computer today and found out I only have a 300 watt power supply. Will this really make a difference? Will the computer just not turn on if it doesn't work?

Also this is a link to the card I bought:

Thanks for reading and helping! :)

ooh. that's marginal. 12V @ 12A = 144 watts. your CPU is 65W, the card could be as much as 75W (though might be less, I don't know exactly), so right there you're sitting at, um, well, 140W.

your machine might boot up fine, and do basic non-demanding display tasks fine, but once you start to push things you'll start actually using power and the supply might call it quits on you. could be as easy as an instant shutdown of windows. could be a little more "sparky"

you might want to consider a new power supply. for a tenner something like this might work alright (generic brand, but should have enough excess to actually not explode on its own)...

I don't think so no. The section DC output has +12 which is 12A in the section underneath called LPA-300C.

Thanks for the help!

for a few quid more, the Antec stuff is a very safe bet. http://www.ebuyer.com/245675-antec-450w-psu-120mm-fan-vp450-4x-sata-1x-pci-e-0761345-06451-4

Hey thanks for the advice! Looks like I'll be sending this card back then. A quick question though, do all GT 640 cards require that wattage? That was an OC version, does that make a difference? Also what website do you use to buy your components?

the ASUS is the one that I have. actually I have two of those, and an ASUS GT610. with cards that don't use extra power connectors, it's really hard to measure exactly how much power they use, so most of the time we just have to go by a worst-case scenario. and any graphics card that doesn't have an extra power connector can use up to 75W since that's the PCIe standard.

a good budget power supply (like an Antec VP or Corsair CX) would take care of those power issues and even last you through future upgrades, but if you weren't prepared for the potential expense then returning the card might be the safest option.

if you're not likely to game hard, you might be ok for a while until you decide to upgrade the power supply. but you'd have to be careful during that time.

Would this be an ideal one also? Currently looking at this one and the Antec one you sent to me. Thanks!
