I recently did a new build with a new SSD but want to get the files off my old Samsung HD300LD (PATA). My new board only has SATA so I bought an adapter http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2C50UH9186 but when I hook it up, the HDD just keeps beeping and clicking. A few bits of info:Windows 7, i7 3770K, Asrock Extreme 4, Samsung 840 Pro 256 (boot), no storage drive yet. I had initially put the jumper on the HDD to slave but now think it should be set to master. Also, when hooking up the adapter, do I need to hook up the 4 pin power cord to the adaptor? Some have said yes, others say no. Also, do I need to do anything in BIOS? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Both the drive and the adapter need separate power from the PSU.
I suspect that you have them powered correctly. What happens if you power up without this adapter connected to the ide drive but with power going to it. If it still beeps and clicks then the drive is probably damaged.

Not sure why you would buy an item with 3 reviews and only one that said it worked for them.

It was suggested to me by a veteran member in a separate thread I started.
