I'm planning on 1866Mhz with cas latency of 9.

Out of these two, which is better and why?

4GB vs. 8

8GB vs. 4

CPU: 4930k
Mobo : Rampage IV Black Edition

More about : 4gb 8gb ram

4Gb is good for most cases. A lot of this depends on the rest of your system specs and what you're going to be running. You need to post those first before anyone can give you any really valuable advice.

Since there are 8 slots on the motherboard
do you mean 4 x 8GB vs 8 x 4GB?
it is quad channel, so the only different that you can add more later if you go with 4x8GB

First question: Why 32GB RAM?

I'm mainly using this for a professional virtual instrument software (music) which needs 32gb to be able to use massive tracks with virtual acoustic software and others. Also secondary gaming.

4x8GB is less stress on the MC (memory controller), always better to run the least amount of sticks while allowing for full channel optimization of DRAM i.e. 2x for a dual channel mobo, 3x for a Tri-channel or 4x for a Quad like you have

I'd go the RJ Z model as #1, those came out aimed at true quad channel and are slightly tuned towards it, the RJ X would be second choice
