Hi All,

I've just installed the above card. I did some reading but I'm not sure I've done it right.

My old 670 took 2 x 6 pin PCIe power. This card comes with a 6 and an 8 pin.

I've got one of the 6 pins from the PSU plugged into the 6 pin socket on the card, and then plugged the remaining 6 into the 6 to 8 pin splitter that came in the box, which means I have one half of the splitter just hanging off?

This doesn't seem right and I'm not seeing the frame-rates I would expect in Skyrim with the graphics on Ultra, considerably less than on the 670.

Is it possible to run a card underpowered or is that ridiculous? If you can advise how I should have hooked it up that would be great.

Thanks for your help

Dave

You must plug the entire 8-pin connector into the card's 8-pin slot. My HD 7970s are the same way. If your PSU only has 6-pin connectors, you cannot run that card properly, if at all. My PSU has 8-pin connectors that can have 2 pins separated to function as a 6-pin.

I've now got 2 x 6 pins plugged into the splitter, plugged into the 8 pin slot. And 2 x Molex plugged into a splitter into the 6 pin slot. Still sluggish though - any thoughts?

Thanks for your time.

I agree with plugging the entire 8 pin power in, otherwise your card wont work at even half speeds as it cant. But skyrim is also one of those games that does well with a very good gpu, but it also requires a good cpu. What processor do you have, as with crap or slower or medium speed processor will bottleneck the 780, at least on skyrim.

I'm not totally sure, that's older tech and lower frequencies than even new gen i3's, but i7's have always been tough buggers. I'm sure you'll still max cpu before you max that 780, but probably wont bottleneck that card now. However, ultra on skyris is pretty demanding, but if you've had it before with a 670, its got to be a power issue then. Plus if your psu doesn't even have the right pcie power plugs, i'd probably recommend upgrading that. Yours might work with included adapters, but that 780 is a demanding power hungry card. I think tdp is over 300w, or around. Plus it draws a lot of amps, are you sure your psu meets the power requirements of the card?

Having done some further reading I'm convinced it's the CPU - I just lost my last post but will re-write and repost. Thanks for your time

Using molex/PCI-E 'Y' splitters isn't an ideal situation but should not be causing your problems.
Exactly which power supply is installed? they're not all created equal.
There's not a problem with the CPU-it's not likely to suddenly loose performance because of a GPU upgrade.
Retest using the same settings as you applied for the GTX670 and bear in mind, even the GTX780 will suffer some performance losses if you get heavy handed with the AA setting.
Otherwise the first rules apply:
If you have made any changes in the BIOS, reset it to the factory defaults
Make sure ALL the previous video drivers are fully uninstalled and any residual files/folders deleted.
Make sure you're using the latest WHQL drivers for your card and operating system. Beta drivers CAN resolve problems, but they can also introduce others and right now you really need the most stable system you can get.
Uninstall any and all tuning/tweaking software and delete any saved profiles when asked.

Sounds like your psu maybe underpowering the card. You are running 2 different splitters just to power the card which really isnt something you want to do. 1 splitter is ok but not 2. The 8 pin and 6 pin both need to be plugged into the card and if you have to use a x2 6pin to x1 8 pin adapter so be it. But both 8 and 6 pin plugs should be in the card. What psu do you have? Im leaning towards the psu lacking enough juice. Also did you uninstall the old drivers before putting in your new gpu? What about motherboard bios update? Alot of motherboards require bios updates to run the new 700 series cards.

The PSU is a 650, and 3DMark seems fine, really decent results. I'm thinking I need a new CPU. I should probably start a new thread for this, but if anyone would be kind enough to give advice as to a decent upgrade I would hugely appreciate it. I have around £500 ($750) to spend and realise that perhaps my motherboard could be equally as 'dated', a Intel DX58SO, LGA 1366/Socket B (BOXDX58SO) - I use 3dsMax and vRay for a living so I don't mind throwing a few quid at an upgrade, what with time being money etc...

Thanks for your help on this
