Well, after waiting for the aftermarket cards and with Amd committing suicide, I'm going to go with a gtx 780. I'm still saving up, but my inclination is to go for the Gigabyte gtx 780 ghz card. Just wondering if this is still a good idea. Thanks.

Personally I would actually go for the amd R9 290 because it is cheaper and more powerful, but that's just preference. The gigabyte version of the 780 is a good card, yet pretty pricy to be honest. You will get more value for money with amd, but if money doesn't matter too much, GO FOR IT :D

The AMD R9-290 is actually not cheaper anymore. In fact it is generally more expensive. I would say go for whichever EVGA card fits your budget. I have the base reference 2871 model and I love it. It overclocks like a monster and stays frosty.

How is AMD committing suicide? The MSI lightning 780 is awesome, the only reason i got the MSI Gaming edition is because it was on sale.

Ok, maybe it's not totally their fault ;) , but by not putting a stop to the price increases, their leg up on Nvidia is pretty much gone. A 780 is better than the plain 290, and costs less. If the prices were original, i might fork over the extra 50 or so for an aftermarket r9 290x, but I'm not paying 700 for a graphics card.

Ohh I gotcha, that's from their cards being much better at mining than Nvidea (At least that's what I heard). Miners have been buying up their cards in bulk. I'm loving my 780 (previously had a 7950) and have had great experience with MSI.
