I just bought a GST780 & New Power supply 850Wtt, updated the HP Pavilion Bios, and NOTHING. just a black screen that says "Press the ESC Key for Startup Menu" but nothing happens...

if the 6 or 8 pin cables are NOT connected, it get " you must connect the PCIe Cables.

what else can i try?

Yes this is the problem with OEM PC's. Before you buy something I would like to suggest you to try the GPU on another system, to see if it actually works !

It happens sometimes that the GPU is broken by birth, so first make sure of it.

Secondly this is risky option to try, but sometimes GPU BIOS update works. You can find help and update file on vendors site.

Thirdly a new MB may not work with your current CPU, there are many reasons behind it, I can tell one the FSB sometimes wont match. Updating the BIOS of MB sometimes work with a older CPU sometimes not, so be very careful before you buy anything. Good luck.

Thank you Lonewolf7 for the time. I actually just got off the phone with Geforce and HP. Geforce says: 'This BIOS has not been upgraded to work with the 700Series, try calling HP to see if they have a BIOS in Beta or something that might not be available to the Public 'YET'. SO called HP, and after being bounced around to 5 different Depts, finally got a supervisor that said "Sorry we Don't Support upgrading". but the Bios should not be the problem.

So you probably are accurate in your assessment. His statement "Don't support upgrading" meant the OEM BIOS has locked out the option of upgrading.

I'll check to see if they have a page that shows compatible GPU... UGG should have been So easy... "Flash the Bios, install the card, GAME ON". but not with HP.. I'll go to Frys' get a new board... that works with the CPU, Memory etc.

Again thanks Loan Wolf. I went and got a New MB, Latest AMD Processor, 16 Gigs of Ram. 500 Gig SSD, and 4 TB Drive for Data, new Case.
use the new Power Supply kept the second GTX 780 I got, and BAM i have a NEW PC that is just ROCKIN... So much for having owned 7 HPs. I'm back to building what i want. it was not like i remember 15 yrs ago when i used to build my own PCs this was very easy... ( putting the New CPU Cooling fan together was the hardest part. LOL thank again.

Moral of this story. the HP Pavilion H8-1220 Desktop with MB: M3970AM, is NOT compatible with the GXT 700 Series. Straight from HP's Mouth.
