Hi Tom's community! I'm new here, I've don't quite a bit of programming work with computers and some CPU architecture design in college, but haven't actually put together my own desktop in almost 2 decades. I was wondering if I could get some input on the following component list, just to sanity check it and see if there are better ideas out there.

And here's the details from the sticky post up top:

Approximate Purchase Date: this week

Budget Range: $510 max after shipping.

System Usage from Most to Least Important:
- office work / internet
- Steam OS (hardware must be linux friendly)
- streaming movies
- some light CAD work (hobby stuff)
- light gaming (Portal, Starcraft 2, flight simulators...). Don't need max settings, just want it to run smoothly on moderate but full resolution settings. Screen is 1920x1080.

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: (as in, parts I have already?)
monitor/mouse/keyboard
80GB 2.5" SSD from laptop
300GB 2.5" HDD from older laptop

Do you need to buy OS: No (Can get student Windows 8 real cheap, and would like to dual boot with Steam OS)

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Newegg, Amazon (I have free shipping with Amazon Prime and Shop Runner)

Location: Goldsboro, NC

Parts Preferences: Haswell CPU for power efficiency, prefer Nvidia GPU (always wanted to dabble in CUDA programming). Small, HTPC type case would be ideal.

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080, but may add a 17" 1920x1200 monitor from my old laptop as a second display. I don't need to game off of both at the same time or anything though.

Additional Comments: Quieter the better, but performance and budget constraints come first.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading:
Old laptop is having reliability issues, and isn't fast enough to play the games I'd like. Well to be fair, it does fine for a couple minutes, then overheats and throttles down the CPU to keep from melting. After that games are unplayable. Carolina summer is especially tough.

Include a list of any parts you have already selected with descriptively labeled links for parts. Please do not post only links:
