Hi guys. Just the other day, I was using my laptop when the screen turned in to a rainbow of pixels. It got the blue screen and I shut it off. Then, I rebooted my laptop and got the message "No bootable device found". Right before this, I heard a loud, scrape-like click from the bottom of my laptop. I assumed that my hard drive died, but just to be sure, I removed it and plugged it in to my desktop to see if I can get any response out of it. I didn't see on my device menu and I heard a loud click from it again. However, when it was back in my laptop, if I accessed the BIOS before the computer tried to boot, I could see the hard drive in the BIOS.

Anyway, given that I heard the click, I can assume that my drive over with.

Here is where you guys can help.

Is there any simple (and free) trick to get the drive working for a short time or in any state where I can get some files off it? Probably not, but I felt it was worth asking.

Also, my OS also went with it. How am I going to reinstall it? I see the product key on the underside of the laptop, but I do not have an installation disc that came with it. However, I do have a Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit installation disc (same OS my laptop had) that I used to install windows on my desktop. However, it was the system builders copy. Could I use that and put in my laptop product key?

Anyway, I would really like some help, especially with trying to get windows on a new hard drive I will purchase in the possibly near future.

Some more info. The laptop is a Gateway NV55s19u. It is just over a year old, seems kind of early for hard drive problems. The hard drive is a Western Digital scorpio 500 GB. I believe it runs at 5400 RPM.

Looks like you will need to buy a new hard drive

But as the OS goes, you could "pirate" the windows 7 copy but rather than using the cracked key they give you, use your legally owned key on the bottom of your laptop. Just search windows 7 home premium 64bit on a torrent site
