How can laptops get such a low power draw

Laptops also use laptop parts. They're not the same in power draw, or performance as a desktop chip for the CPU and the GPU.

As for building one, there is very few laptops that are modular and let you really build them.

Laptops use m or h or q series chips, mobile low wattage/coltage chips. The same with their built in gpu's, 770 'm'. Lower voltage. If you go online and compare a mobile to the desktop of the same chip, you'll see a two fold difference with the desktop. And most top end laptops also only game while plugged in, when disconnected it throttles you to 50 percent. And that 50 percent only lasts an hour or two tops while gaming. And when you are plugged in, if your gaming with everything at max, you'll kill your battery and the laptop will shut down as the power draw is to high, in which the laptop limits and drops performance down to stop that from happening. Another huge problem with gaming laptops is cooling, running at 100 percent, and only one fan shared between the cpu and gpu, laptop throttles itself again to around 50 percent. And all these 50 percents are still off 50 of desktop equivalents. So theoretically, top end laptop to equivalent pc could mean 25 percent of performance while gaming, especially on battery not plugged in.

Now top end laptop parts, are really like the lower tier of high end desktop parts, so even a gaming laptop top specs top performance, same priced pc, double the categoriy of parts, double power draw, quadrouple performance.

And as far as building, I'd almost think you'd have to buy one and upgrade. Don't know anywhere that sells laptop shells like pc cases. Also, if your talking high end like gtx 780m cards and i7 4770m/h, it would be extrememly cheaper to buy a laptop with it, then to buy yourself and assemble. If you are assembling, to make any of this work will require extreme mod skills, and a very well thoughout layed out planned written over and over. Laptops aren't the same as pcs. Problem is there isn't just a generic part that fits all, like battery, power plug, motherboards, even screens are all different typed cables, sized differently, ect.

Well me and my friends are going to be doing a project that would be powered by a battery. We will 3D print a case. I just need to find a way to make it run on batteries, it will be plugged in mostly so 1-2 hours on battery is all that I need

I would like to use an AMD APU so I will not have to install a laptop gpu. This battery would have to power a small micro itx motherboard (unless there is something that takes less power) 4 gigs of ram. An amd APU. And a 250 gb 2.5 inch hard drive (unless an ssd would take less power). No DVD drive. Also a low lower screen (touchscreen is the goal)

Well, sounds like a fun and hopefully promising project. your amd apu will run around 100 watts, but only the new 7000 series could be remotely considered gaming laptop. And your not going to find an easy way to make a desktop run off batteries, at least not the size and for the duration that will fit into a laptop. Which is why they make mobile versions of these parts.

If your talking desktop components in a laptop, you have 100w for apu plus more when your pushing it, a ssd would greatly increase your battery draw, and a touch screen even low res will also be power hungry. I'd say if your using desktop components you'd be looking around 300-400 watts, maybe more. Laptops usually run 200's.

As far as buying, I don't know where to look for new, but ebay or specific manufacturors of laptops might sell replacement components you could use. As far as put in a laptop cpu into desktop mobo, or cpu into laptop mobo its all about socket type and size. I cant put a amd into an intel, or a z77 into a z87, or fm3 into a am
