Cant afford a gtx 780ti would the asus 290x be my best bet?

title says it all, i have a evga gtx760 right now i use at stock settings. good card but want more fps so i would like to upgrade the 760 and can spend up to $550? Seems from all the bench tests/reviews i have seen that the 290x from asus is the closest to the 780ti in fps/speed?

the 290x is a great card and asus makes good coolers, if you find one in your price range pull the trigger.

You could also add a second GTX 760, if your MB allows it and your PSU is rated 700W or more. if you're interested in the idea, tell us the model of the MB and PSU.

The Asus R9 290x is much better than the 780ti. Its faster in terms of speed too..You'll definitely get better fps on the 290x than the 780ti

mind posting a single resource showing that the 290x is the superior gaming card? I could post 10 reviews saying the opposite if I felt like taking the time.

I dont really know about that but every bench test i saw showed the 780ti coming out the winner in all resolutions with games like battlefield 4,crysis 3,far cry 3 ,etc

I think the 290x will be slightly faster than 760 SLI, and the problem is that if you SLI 760s, they should be the 4gb version. The 290x will most likely be a faster solution and will definitely be an easier one.

no ways.. the 780ti is way faster than the 290x. nvidia clearly frogleaped over the 290x by the 780ti. if you mean 780 yes but by few framerates. you can sli but mind you will run into sli woes such as microstuttering,etc. also the game profiles have to enabled in sli for the game to understand & fully utilise 2 cards.

If is up to 2k (Full HD), even a cheaper card like 770 or 290 would be just fine. If you use higher resolution like 4k, then you should look for something like 290x or 780Ti. But lets be real, we tend to change our cards every 3 years so it's no point to spend money on something that we don't need. If you want to buy 290 or 290X, I would avoid being the ones with reference cooling or Asus or Gigabyte or even MSI that has custom cooling. I would go for something like Sapphire 290/290x Tri-X. It's much better than Asus/Gigabyte.

Asus cooling system is from 780ti version it doesn't sit properly on the chipset so the cooling is not the best. It's better than reference one but not really good. Where Sapphire's one is made specially for 290/290X and cools much better.

Gigabyte, Asus and Sapphire are generally good brands. The Tri-X is a superb card.

Performance would be good, e.g. over 60fps at 2560x1600 in TombRaider, Hitman, BioShock. That's with cards with 2GB each, at 2560x1600, so don't believe the hype about 4GB cards.

In fact two GTX 760 2GB cards will beat a R9-290 in some games (and lose in others). Against a R9-290x, they'll probably lose most of the time, but it's still close.

Don't get me wrong, I usually advise a single high-end card rather than two weaker ones. But in your case you already have one, and the price difference is almost $400. It's just not worth it IMO.

Go with SLI don't even bother wasting the money the 290's are marked up 50% right now, and the 760's trade blows with them so it shouldn't even cross your mind as to what to do. I thought about getting them myself they're cooler, cheaper, quieter, and if you have dual x16 PCIE slots you can see more gains from them.
