Hey Guys,

I was looking into getting the MSI X79A-GD45 Plus and pairing it with the Intel i7-4960X. I do a lot of video editing, 3D design, and game asset creation so I am attracted to the out of the box speed of the 4960X. I was looking at the memory speeds the motherboard supports and the max speed that is listed is PC 2400. I dont want to spend $500 + on RAM so I was looking at the PC 2133 sticks. I saw on intel's website that the 4960X supports up to a max of 1866 which got me thinking if i even needed to worry about buying the faster speed stick if the processor is going to just dumb it down. I do not plan to do much over clocking aside from something simple like using the OC Genie. I am a software guy not a hardware guy. Should I even bother looking at the 2133? While cost is not a HUGE concern i would rather not spend money on a feature if I will not even be using it.

I also saw that the MSI board says it supports PC 1800 NOT 1866.... is this a typo? I was browsing newegg and didnt find any PC 1800. If this is not a typo should I stick with the MSI board or should I consider another board? I was also looking at the ASUS X79 DELUXE which seemed like a good buy. It also looked like he had an OC feature similar to OC Genie.

Thanks a lot for your help guys!

First I'd look for a better mobo, I won't touch MSI due to their poor QC, might look at the Asus or ASRock offerings in X79...then on the DRAM take a look at the GSkill 2400 sets (want a 4 stick package so you can utilize quad channel, either 4x4GB or 4x8GB, would suggest their RipJaws Z or Trident models in 2133/9 or 2400/10, should be happy with those and they are perfectly fine and safe and your CPU can handle them ;)

I would get a quad kit of 2400 mhz gskill tridents. should run just fine with your setup amd that is one of the few tasks that faster memory actually helps. Those kits shouldnt break the bank @2400 if you go above 2400 prices get steep quick.

Thank for the reply guys!

So i guess the next question i have is what Asus mobo would be a good bet? I am not really up to date on a lot of hardware related items so i do not know what would be good. The Asus model i listed earlier seemed good? not sure if it has the automated OC feature though...

What are your thoughts?
