Hmm, I might enquire about it. Does seem like a very good price and I don't mind if case is a bit scratched, sure I can clean it up a bit or deal with it. Only problem is it's for the lady in my life so to speak and she's less techy than me so I'll have to explain to her that even though it's second hand it *SHOULD* all be fine.
 



laptops can run hot yes especially with a dedicated gpu its recomended to have a cooling pad at least as these get quite warm and the intake fan is on the bottom so if you have it on your knee etc it wont be able to breath without a pad. its also for long life
i recomend the above due to fan speed control

i3 740m is all you need depending on what your doing
i5 is better with a bit more grunt power and can occ itself for more speed
740m same graphics
 



in games the i5 will have the best advantage youll get a few more frames out of it making some games more playable then others

but those games you mentioned i wouldnt see star craft 2 and dota 2 giving you issues on a i3 if you got another stick of ram for it to make 8

personally id go with the i5 as changing the processor later can be a royal pain and adding more ram later is easier
