PCI express 2.0 and 3.0

my coworker has a mobo with PCI 2.0 (slot 16)

can it be used for a good gaming card? (like radeon 7870 2GB) wil it work, what will happen if he plugs it in? Can he plug it in there at all?

It will work. Putting a graphics card with PCIE 3.0 x16 interface to a PCIE 2.0 x16 slot has no difference in real world usage. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Intel/Ivy_Bridge_PCI-Express_Scaling/
