Spare hard drive - when connect won't allow PC to power up

I replaced my old desktop (recently 'dead') with a new pre-built desk top, and moved all my spare hard drives to the new PC. The new PC would not power up until, when trouble-shooting, I removed one spare hard disk at a time until I found that a 1TB Maxtor was the culprit. When I plug in the SATA power, it causes the new PC not to power up at all (in fact I bought 2 power supplies not knowing what the problem was). I know it is the Maxtor HD because now my old PC works since it is disconnected...and when I reconnect that Maxtor to the old PC, it too will not power up at all. I have a ton of family pictures and video on this HD and really would love to hear some ideas on what to do. Help!

fzabkar,
Absolutely perfect. I can't thank you enough – I was able to get nearly 1 TB worth of family pictures and videos from about three years onto a different hard drive. I will be backing them up to a remote site tomorrow. Again I cannot thank you enough...all I had to do was snip out the diode and the hard disk worked flawlessly.
