Mixing cards in crossfire possible?

Is it possible to crossfire an r9 290 with, say, a 6950?

No. 2 different architectures. If it was something like a 7850 and 7870, yes. The 7870 would drop to 7850 speeds. But it won't work on your case. Two different cards.

No. The 290 no longer uses the cross fire bridge. The 6000 series does. Even if they could in pretty sure it wouldn't work.
