I have two laptops. One is broken Sony VAIO with Win 7 on it and another is HP dv6 with Win XP. Pl let me know if I can put my broken Sony's HDD into HP and expect it to work as is or if I can at least take back up of my data.
If its an OS compatibility issue then would it work fine with HP laptop with Win 7 as OS? Pl help.

You can put the Vaio's HDD into the HP laptop to pull off data you would just need to go use a USB drive big enough to fit all that you want.

As long as you don't plan to use the laptop for very long it should be fine. The reason you can't use it for long is that Windows will detect the hardware has changed and require you to reactivate Windows.

The win7 HDD's license is only good/valid for use with the Vaio. The XP Hdd license is only good/valid for the HP. If you want to use the Vaio HDD in the HP then you will need to reinstall the HP oem version of XP onto it (after rescuing your data or course). If you want to run win7 on the HP you will need to purchase a new copy of win7.

Just as an FYI. if you find that the hp is capable of running windows8, its' license is transferable to a new pc; unlike win7 and previous, so it may be a 'smarter' purchase.

@popatim- Thanks for the quick response. You said if I want to use the Vaio HDD in HP then I will have to reinstall XP oem version after rescuing data. Pl let me know why do I need to rescue my data first as the whole purpose to use the vaio HDD in the working HP laptop is to access and rescue the HDD data. My HP laptop has XP Professional edition SP3 so pl let me know if this must have XP oem version or Win 7 to run the Vaio HDD!!!

@ThatVietGuy- Thanks for the quick response. My HP laptop has XP Professional edition SP3 so pl let me know if this OS would be able to run my vaio HDD of Win 7!!! Also pl let me know what is the difference between external closure and hard drive dock. I could see that HD dock is more costlier than external closure but not sure what each one can do!!!

So, if you only want to rescue data, then you need to buy and enclosure or a dock. A dock turns the hard drive into a portable hard drive like the ones you see online for sale. A dock, however, just lets you connect hard drives, but it's not portable.

No matter what you choose the goal is to be able to boot the drive from the dead computer and read the files on it.

@ThatVietGuy - Actually my first preference would be to fully use my Vaio HDD with my HP laptop just like it was working with my Vaio and that's why I wanted to know if its possible at all but looks like its not possible and could be a risk if tried so looks like my only option is to recover the data.
Pl let me know what do you mean the enclosure just lets you connect the hard drives but not portable? I mean how does it work if it doesnt work like pan drive when connected to the laptop?

Ok so you mean to say I should be able to connect the vaio HDD to my hp laptop with Win XP on it for shorter period. Would I be able to use my vaio hdd for longer period if I install Win 7 on HP?

Also pl let me know how hard drive enclosure works. Would I be able to use my hdd with enclosure as an external portable drive?
