Seagate XT Hybrid: Very noisy!

Hi guys,

Recently noticed that my laptop is being incredibly noisy. This may have been going on for longer and I simply haven't noticed it because I wear a headset, but I have noticed over the last few weeks that my hard drive is constantly making a very loud "whirring sound", similar to those made when computers start up. It is not 100% of the time, and sometimes closing programs down will make it stop, however, this is not a guarantee which leads me to the conclusion it isn't necessarily based on the fact it is undergoing heavy usage.

For instance, I was playing Counter Strike with skype open but wasn't in a call - I closed my skype, and within a second the whirring abruptly ended. I continued playing, and noticed when I took my headset off after being on my desktop following the end of the match it had started whirring again.I closed Counter Strike, and the whirring stopped. Twenty minutes later it started again when I was just browsing the internet, and even closing all Chrome windows didn't end the noise. It ended again 15 minutes later, then started again when I opened skype to call again.

It's becoming incredibly annoying as the whirring is very loud, and I have been unable to find any parallels anywhere - all advice is regarding "clicking" and "scratching sounds". It isn't any of this, it just constantly sounds like it is running 3D mark, rendering a Vegas file all whilst playing a 4k movie, even when I'm just browsing!

The hard drive is, as suggested by the title, a Seagate XT 750gb Hybrid. I can post any other information required.

Thanks in advance,

I ran all the SeaTools test and passed them all, just before someone offers this advice

I have a pair of Momentus XT 500s in my laptop and they're quite quiet.

Opening skype should not induce this kind of noise, nor should just playing a song or opening my browser. Playing a game, yes I can accept that there is going to be quite a bit of noise, but surely not for something so trivial as a google chrome menu, or even skype being simply opened? In addition to this, I'm fairly certain this did not happen until quite recently...

I have 8gb of DDR3 so that does seem a little unlikely...!

On the off chance someone is actually gonna bother to help me with this, strangely all spinning noises are ended temporarily whenever I press control alt delete... If I do this it stops immediately.

Well your description of the problem IMO links SSHD access to the noise and Seagates have had issues with coils getting noisy over time. You can verify this by simply running a a/v scan on the drive. I suspect the noise will be there for the duration the drive is in use.

Check with Seagate to see if they issued a firmware update to address the problem like they did with some of their desktop drives.

After that if you are sure you didnt leave a disk in the optical drive, please contact seagate for an RMA.
