Please explain the Intel CPU prices to me

Why do all generations cost the same? I was trying to save some money willing to run an older generation, in exchange for favoring the Intel platform this time around (was always on AMD). Looking at the prices for unlocked "just for gaming" CPUs i get the impression they are trying to make fun of me.

Intel Core i5 4670K (2013) - 206 Euro
Intel Core i5 3570K (2012) - 213 Euro
Intel Core i5 2500K (2011) - 239 Euro

And with the i7 it is the same picture: No matter what CPU in the *770k line, they all cost about ~300 Euro. With that in mind, who would buy the old ones then unless you care about temps or wattage specifically? They are competing with themselves here.

Aren't older models supposed to be sold cheaper?

Intel does not announce "official" price drops on older CPUs therefore retailers do not drop prices if they do not want to. Intel has already made their money when they sold their CPUs to OEMs and retailers. Therefore, whether or not the OEMs and retailers sell their remaining stock of older CPU does not make much difference to Intel. Actually, it may be possible for OEMs to sell back unused CPUs to Intel, but that depends on the signed contract.

It is the discretion of the retailers to set the price of the CPU to consumers. If they really want to clear their inventory, then they can lower the prices. If not, then they just take up warehouse storage space...
Hi,

The main reason is that the sandy bridge is "superior" to ivy and haswell.
Let me explain why:

At stock, the later version is about 5-10% more efficient than their predecessor, mainly because of the architecture and the base clock speed.

But on overclocking, sandy bridge is a beast: you can overclock it easier and overheats less than ivy bridge and haswell.
You can get some sandy bridge at 4.6 to 5 ghz while ivy is hard to hit 4.6 ghz and it's even worse on haswell.

When intel found that out, I guess they kept prices high on sandy so that more people buy the other model.

funny ! The new better processors are cheaper . i think the reason is that the supply of the chips ,which production was stopped , is decreasing but the demand is still high for upgrading . So , the price is going up.

Alright. I guess it is a mix of everything that has been posted, but ultimately really does seem like it is up to the retailers.

Thanks for all the replies.

In the end, the low price spread is a testament to the fact that improvements in the recent generations of CPUs have been minuscule. If someone priced Sandy Bridge i5s at $150, the supply at that price wouldn't last for long.

The reason is simple, lots of people with old motherboards who want a good upgrade while reusing motherboard to save cash. Since intel does not make older CPUs' anymore, then the supply is limited, while the demand still exists.

Previous generations are NOT superior unlike people saying here, they are at best equal with overclocking in mind, and then you still will be missing on the new features and better chipset with older CPU.

So Jaguar do you mean to say that Intel does not announce official price drops on their CPU but AMD does ? Why is that? AMD CPU tend to get cheaper with time but Intel font.Intel is in the lead maybe that is why they are so stubborn but then their CPU also usually tend to be better than AMD.
