I am sorry if this thread already exists but i didnt find anything similar to my problem!
To start with, I built a gaming PC (upgrading from an old one) around 5 months ago. I live in India. I did quite a bit of research before I decided that I will go with the following rig:
CPU: intel i5-3570k
GPU: Nvidia GTX650 ti boost
Mobo: asrock Z77 pro4
I decided to stick with the old cabinet and PSU and RAM (4GB transcend (2X2GB) 1333MHz).
When I went to the vendor he suggested I change the cabinet and the PSU and I agreed since I needed front panel audio and USB connections. So I got these
cabinet: zebronics magnet
PSU: asiapower 500w
I had never heard of this PSU brand before, the vendor suggested and I agreed (since I didnt know about the need for good PSU, which later I learnt the hard way)
Everything was fine for like 5 months, no problems at all. Then I decided to overclock my CPU and GPU. I had done this before on my old PC and also watched videos on Youtube on how to do it for my specific CPU. I tried the overclock suggested by the mother board BIOS @ 4.0Mhz ( this was the next step after 'disabled') and my GPU @ 1144MHz (I think, not really sure). Everything was fine, booted up fine, played some games like NFS rivals nothing really crazy went down. Now, after like 3 days or so, when I was playing WARFACE, the PC just crashed. I was shocked since warface is not even a graphic intensive game, ITS MULTIPLAYER. That's it, the PC never came on. I press the start button and nothing happens not even the fans begin to run! I figured the PSU was fried and I went to the vendor . The vendor was happy to replace it for me and I bought the same thing again (like an idiot).
The overclock was still there and the PSU failed again after like half an hour of playing the same game! same result, no boot. Nothing!
since I am a PC addict (can't spend a day properly without it) I hooked up my friends PSU which is frontec 450W. This time I thought the overclock might have been a problem and I set it back to default in the BIOS. The computer booted up fine and everything (did a little test by playing warface again for like 20 min) and I left the PC on for some time, no problems there.
Now I am back on warface in the night, and guess what CRASH! but this time it booted up on its own after like 2 sec. I am going crazy over this issue I seriously don't know what is going on here and I need some expert advice. If go to the vendor he will just try to make a sale and try to fool me. AGAIN.
I also went back to my friend GOOGLE and did some more research saw that even though the 500W PSU is sufficient, even after overclock, it might be a problem with the quality of the PSU itself.
I succumb to the pressure and write this thread. Please advice! I need my PC back normal.
Would be great if anybody could suggest a good PSU for my purpose (with links if possible).
I would also like to try overclocking again.
I saw the CX500 should be good enough, but I am a little sceptical.
PLEASE HELP!
Thank YOU!

More about : psu failing multiple times
The Corsair is far superior to the Asiapower. As you discovered, it really is a very poor quality PSU. The Corsair should meet your needs.
Not all PSUs are created equally, nor do they all operate as advertised. I would be surprised if your current PSU put out more than 250w of power.
Don't skimp when it comes to PSUs. If you look through the forums here. you will see brands like Seasonic, Corsair, XFX, and Antec recommended again and again.
Get the Corsair and have fun! BTW, if you plan on OCing, I would recommend you step up to a 650w PSU to give yourself some headroom for future growth.

The ridiculous cheap rubbish door stop the vendor is selling you wont run a calculator.
http://forums.techarena.in/reviews/1469554.htm
HA HA HA HA HA HA I Wouldnt use that for a door stop! I have had guys at pc fairs try to sell me stuff like this for £10 and when I said it would not last a month they said it would last until next week and I could buy another one. You are lucky the pc has not been destroyed. When you say you need a 500 watt one they write 500 watts on it. It is not a real power supply, the man is stealing your money.
That is a mostly empty box with a tiny power circuit in, maybe 100 watts total power.
Send your Father round to have a word with him.

Thank you so much for the super quick reply.
Yes I agree with you, did see a lot of Seasonic, Corsair, XFX, and Antec recommended here and on other websites too.
Well I am on a budget here so if you could narrow it down for me a little. My budget is something around 3000 INR(about 50$ I guess). Also with the specific amount of power I would need or any particular model I should look for. I don't think I will be adding another GPU or anything just OCing and maybe add some RAM and OC them too.
Again Thank You for the reply. Much appreciated. I knew I could rely on you guys

Well I took the advice and bought a corsair VS550. Now I am having different problem. I hooked up the new PSU. I fire up the PC and the fans begin to rotate for a sec and then stops I leave it like that and they start again and stops again then after that again it start, this time it keeps on till the windows logo comes up and poof gone again. I am pretty sure I made all the right connections cause I hooked up the old PSU and it boots up perfectly.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Another PSU burnt successfully!
this time I think the GPU might have something to do with it.
let me back it up. I was playing warface, the online multiplayer, and the system crashed as usual after like 20 Min of gaming. This time the screen went all pink before crashing. The system turned on by itself and I started looking for a solution online. Unfortunately couldn't find anything positive. I saw in some forums that this might be the GPU overheating so they suggested a furmark stress test. I started a stress test on furmark and after around 5min the PSU.
got burnt. Does this mean.the GPU is screwed? The temperature was around 85 Celsius the last I saw before it crashed. Of course this time the PC never turned on
Is this a confirmation that the GPU is faulty? I have a zotac gtx 650 to boost

You are taking too much risk with your components man. You cannot be going through PSUs this fast. They can take down the whole system with them. I suspect power quality or/and thermals in this case.
Like the post above mentioned, check a) if the power to your home is gounded, b) is coming from a 16 amp outlet and not a 5 amp outlet, c) does not have other heavy appliances on the same outlet, and d) has voltage and surge protecting UPS.
Then, get 3 fans from the hardware store and add them in 1-in 2-out mode. That will haelp with thermals if they are a suspect.

@COLgeek well yeah that's the confusion I am having actually the corsair PSU never got fried. It never actually booted completely. The fans begin to run but never completed the boot. Always restarts before entering windows.
@half life yes I am pretty sure the answer to all your points is a positive yes.
the UPS is the latest external hardware that got replaced before the whole problem started so I will look into that!
If you have anymore pointers please help. Thank You.

I suspect that is your problem.
What I think is happening is this. your recommended psu wattage is 500 - 550 W. But that is what the smps out puts. the actual draw at the power point is higher, and by how much is dependent on the efficiency of the SMPS. at 80% efficiency, it is close to 650 VA for a 550 output.
But in your case, since the UPS output is limited to 600 VA, the smps is starved of energy and as a result blows up.
Get a 1 kva UPS. all your problems would be solved.

I have had the same ups for more than 5 years. With a very recent battery replacement. Never had a problem of this sort ever before.
how about I run the PC on mains(directly from the wall w/o ups) just to Check if the ups is to be blamed? That should not burn up the PSU right?
Of course unless there are huge voltage fluctuations.

that's interesting. one question. did you add any new hardware to the pc recently? generally the GPU needs the most wattage. or a new monitor that feeds from the same ups?
and yes, if ups is the bottleneck, then the system should work just fine from the mains. and when verifying, do remember to max out the smps with some graphics heavy game just to be sure.
in the us, they have this kill-a-watt device that can really tell you how much is the power draw, but here in india, i think multi meter is the way. but that's not very user friendly for many.

i do know oc pulls more watts but don't know by how much.don't bother with the multi meter. just try the direct from mains approach and let me know.
and do try the stock AND the oc configurations to confirm.
Well I ended up getting a Zebronics ZEB-600W PSU. I hooked it up and the PC runs fine when not gaming. While I start a game, any game, the frame rates are like 7-10. That is just crazy. I used to play the games before and it would run perfectly. IDK whats wrong here. I tried the other PCIe connector given on the PSU too to make sure. Didnt help. Also made sure everything sits snug.
I ran some stress tests here are the results.

And yes i noticed that my CPU temps are going haywire too. Even at idle.

the temps were taken before and at the time of running Prime95.
Why is this happening? I am not able to play any game. the videos and other normal computing is just fine.
If it makes any difference the fan on the PSU is directed towards the cpu (downwards). IDK if this is the case with all PSU. Definitely not like my old PSU(s).
EDIT: temps after some time.

first off, zeb PSU was not the best thing to buy, but since I also use it for my browsing desk (this pc), i will not pick on that too much.
secondly, your case badly needs thermal solution. i did flag that in one of my earlier posts. forget about frame rates, you first need to allow the cpu and gpu to breath. you risk frying them. also, i suspect the crashes were overheat protection triggered by CPU.
get fans, a lot of them. and put them in a scientific configuration, use this for a reference. do this and then try your test again.
also, i am sure you know it, but i think you will need a custom cpu cooler if you overclock. something like this.

I would probably rate this as the dumbest thing ever done by me! The cpu fan (stock) was not sitting in its place properly! That was the whole reason for the overheating. I overlooked the fan displacement before it really looked like it was in place (talk about parallax effect). I just fit it properly and BAM! everything is back to normal! the frames were back in action. I can play the games now with ease! I fact i think i can see the 64 bit working its magic(may be just placebo).
And yes @half life i know zeb is not the best choice but i had to wait for more than a month to get the VS550 replaced.
I just couldnt wait for that long. I had to make a decision and somehow its paying off (up until now at least).
Anyhow thank you very much for all your help. Much appreciated.
Happy Gaming (computing)
