I have a Kingwin Maximum 650w PSU, running on a ASUS MSA97 motherboard, Quad Core AMD AM3+ 95W 3.8 overclocked to 4.2Mhz. and I want run a EVGA GTX 760, with a GTX 650 dedicated to Physix. Will my PSU handle it?

Solution

Incorrect. The PSU is plenty for that pair of cards. The 650 uses 43w at peak power, and the 760 peaks at 165 watts. You could run two 760's off that PSU.

I am unfamiliar with that particular model from kingwin, but kingwins other models are good units. (Mach 1, lazer and stryker receiving jonnyguru review scores of 8, 8.5, and 9 respectively)

[edit] on further investigation, your PSU is a Superflower built unit, which is a good quality manufacturer. you're good to go.

I am upgrading from the 650 to the 760, and just figured, why not use both? If it's too much power draw, I'll just take out the 650.

this is the model number i came up with, KINGWIN ABT-650MM 650W. i wouldnt recommend that psu with a single gpu. its a poor quality unit.

Also, note that Antec isn't actually a PSU manufacturer, and their units vary in quality with the company that actually makes them. Seasonic makes Antec's high end units (e.g. HCG-M), while other models are built by more mediocre manufacturers such as CWT (Phantom, smartpower modesl, etc)

yea thats the one i found on newegg. newegg stated 2 12v rails, but looking at the sticker on the unit, its clearly one rail. you will be able to power both cards, but i wouldnt trust that psu on my system, personally. i would replace it with a decent unit from a reputable manufacturer.

It's been running my rig for about a year with no problems. Granted, the 650 isn't going to be working it too hard, but Borderlands 2 in 1080p on one screen and 1080p video stream on the other work fine. Current rig just can't really run Physx.

you should be fine with that setup.

@David: Enjoy your Physx card :)

@Das: It is the only reference you used here, and unless there is something you haven't shared, you asserted it was a bad PSU based solely on newegg with no caveat that your only information was from newegg comments. As "evidence" to back up an opinion, newegg is extremely weak. If that were my only source of information on a product, I would refrain from commenting, or at least add an explicit disclaimer. It falls down in comparison to the extensive testing done on reputable sites such as jonnyguru, hardwaresecrets, etc., and especially against Superflowers excellent track record.

Also, towards your first comment, it's rare for a PSU to have more than one true +12v rail. Almost all have a single +12v rail, just multiple cables on that rail.

Everything is up and running with the 760 SC ACS and the 650 being dedicated to Physx. without any overclocking I get 3DMark Fire Strike score of 5020, not bad for a AMD FX-4300 I think. very happy with it so far! Thanks for all the help guys!
