Using an "N" access point with an "AC" Router?

I currently have an wireless access point at the far end of my house that I have wired via ethernet to my main Wifi Router at the other end of the house(same SSID). Both the router and the Access point are "N" class. I am looking at purchasing an AC router (I have some devices capable of AC already) but am wondering if I do so, if I'd need to change out my access point, or if I can leave it as is (configured with the same SSID on the same subnet, etc).?
Anyone have any suggestions/opinions on this? I of course realize that I'd get slower speeds when connected to the access point, but will it otherwise work well?
Thanks

You can use an N AP on either router, although I would recommend using a different SSID for the 5GHz N or AC radio so that you can distinguish them when you select a connection on device capable of using either radio.

Your speed connected to the AP will be fine, especially if you are in close proximity with the device.
