There is an error screen with a message with no option to push a start button.

Info: An unexpected I/o error has occurred.
This error common to Gateway Acer Notebooks? I have a 250g HDD that should not be damaged. I want to know if this is a common occurrence and what steps I should take next.
I cannot get into the BIOS
I cannot get to "Start"
Anyone else have this problem or better yet a solution or even a troubleshooting solution to the problem?
