I'm considering building a micro ATX based compact PC. Basic specs;

Current or reasonably current I7 4 core CPU (overclocking not required but nice)
multiple USB3 ports
6gbps internal and external SATA
NVIDIA graphics with at least 2GB
Decent case (wiring behind mobo) but be fairly slim and VERY QUIET, several USB3 and some USB2 ports, DVI and HDMI video ports, audio ports, mic port
5-700 watt Gold PSU
good, well supported mobo with decent on board audio and gigabit Ethernet
Win 7 (HP or Pro)
HD - probably WD Caviar Black 1gb.
Full backup system needed - WD?

Use - browsing, some light gaming and flight simulation, MS Office 2013 will be installed.

Objective - decently performing system while keeping price down.

I would appreciate suggestions on what components to use. I'm fairly good at PC assembly and am an IT professional.

Thanks!

Ron

An i7 is complete overkill for your usage. I can build you a much more balanced build if you give me a budget

I know it will add at least $100 to the cost, but it's a strong preference. 4 cores with hyperthreading, and I like I7.

The backup system is less critical; I've an older one I can use for now.

The PSU - anything lower then 500 tends to not be enough to handle decent gpu's and some external devices.

FYI, space is important, and I also want to minimize external devices. At this point wireless mouse, keyboard, webcam (clipped to top of monitor), backup drive, monitor. With lots of USB ports I avoid an external hub. I'll use the speakers built into the monitor I already have for now.

I'm not sure about budget, but if it comes in too high I can't do the build.

Thanks!

An i5 also has 4 cores, but no hyperthreading. Some programs can't even use the hyperthreading. An i5 4670k is still a very powerful CPU. You'll barely be able to notice a difference in general use and light gaming.
