I would like to upgrade from XP to Vista but I only have a Vista reinstall disc, can I use it for this job?

Solution

i totally agree, i hate vista! but i bet you want compatibility with games. The installation disc, not the repair disc, should be free and totally legal to download. You would find it as an .iso file and just make sure you download the right service back and edition (basic, premium, ultimate etc 32bit or 64 bit if you have more than 4GB system RAM), which version you need will depend on the Vista product key you already have..

Do you have the product activation key? If you can't then you probably won't be able to fully install vista. If you have the activation key AND the disk hasn't been activated yet for any other computer then it yes, it should work. They both have essentially the same files. Although i would really recommend upgrading to something like Windows 7 Home Premium and it currently costs just under a hundred bucks.

I am also wanting to upgrade my old computer from XP to Vista Home Premium. I have the product key for my Vista, it is on my Gateway laptop that is damaged and inoperable. I have a Gateway desktop that I wanted to put the Vista on. The sticker on the bottom of my laptop says Windows Vista Home Premium OEMact and it is 32-bit. Will this work and if not can you explain why (has me curious)?

you should be able to just use the key, if it doesnt work you would have to call MS and explain the situation and its up to the service rep to let you transfer the key (if it isnt worn off the sticker that is)
