need help picking router

Solution
very little latency too, so i shortly after tried it as a repeater router, and connected through ethernet. (in one of the PC ports, it was connected in the "internet" port before. ) this was becuase i got a ps3 and wanted to be able to connect wirelessly just one room over from the router and that worked ok. best advice is to just get a good single router, place it wisely, and if needed get extended range antennas for it

I'm a little confused here--are you looking to connect the router to the modem in a wireless fashion, or are you looking to buy a router (which will natively already be able to connect to the modem via cat5e or cat6 cable) that offers wireless functionality?

OK. You can do it, but I can't see a good reason to do so, unless you have a desktop PC that is placed somewhat far away from the modem--in which case $40 just isn't going to cut it. You'd either have to have that functionality already built in to both the router and modem, or have some kind of extender on both ends. There are other options though (if the above scenario is akin to your setup).

You could get a cheap wireless router, then install a wireless card in the PC or a USB wireless adapter.
You would only need either USB or PCI wireless adapter for you PC--the PCI (or even PCIe) will give you better connectivity.

I wouldn't consider this solution what others would as optimal, but for $40 it gets the job done.

i used DD wrt firmware on one of my routers and used it AS my wireless network card. so i had one router, acting as my PC wireless card, connecting to the acutal router+modem. so if thats what you mean, yes its possible, and it worked pretty good actually.

That's pretty cool--what did you use to connect the router with the custom firmware to the PC? That's definitely an option for nickzappia, but only if his modem is a wireless router + modem combo.

i think i just manually set the TCP/IP in windows to get it to work :p. the firmware on the router was DD-WRT and its like tomato but i like it more. I probably used a guide on the DD wrt website to get it work and lots of tweaking

Yea, that would work, but it still doesn't solve the problem of connecting the wireless router to the modem. When it says "wireless" it refers to the devices you want to set up in home, such as your laptop or ipad. That's all good, but the router still needs a way to access the rest of the world--"the internet"--which is done by physically connecting to the modem.

So, yes, the router in that link will work, but that's only if you physically connect it to your modem using an ethernet cable.

Oh, I see. Your PC still has its own NIC, which you connected to the router, which then went to the next hop, and out. I thought you somehow fused that router with your motherboard or something like that haha
