Old monitor not picked up by new gpu?

I was running a dual display setup with my radeon 6970, using a pretty old sony monitor. I recently got the radeon r9 290 and the monitor is not showing up. Is this hardware incompatibility or could I have missed something software wise?

If its vga you're SOL. The r9 290 and 290x do not support any analog signals. The dvi port(s) are dvi-d and a dvi to vga adapter will not work it requires a much more expensive converter to go from dvi-d to vga. For what an converter costs you dang near by a new monitor.
