So im wondering how to do this (my first pc building experience). So right now I have 1 tb hard drive with windows 7 in it, however I would like to use an ssd with a hard drive and have a back up hard drive with windows as a just in case.

So just some basic questions, I get and SSD and HDD. If windows is on my SSD it will boot fast and anything I download/games I access/ documents, there will be a notification asking if I would like to save to ssd or hdd, yes?

what about the second hdd? will that confuse the motherboard/OS or interconnect them incase of problems? I would like to have it separate. I assume the best way to do this is simple load windows then have it inside my tower but disconnected to motherboard/PSU.

Solution
Hello... Yes
There is no designate "storage or backup boot HD" in the BIO's, Just "BOOT ORDER" that could cause any problems, if ya want to keep it hooked up.
Hello... Good questions...
With a SSD and HD combo, you must always use "Custom/Advanced" install to direct a new program to you HD, Also you must remember to always Choose "SAVE AS" to download / etc to your HD... there is no Quick set and Forget setting, and you will keep your OS SSD clean.

If you Want to keep a backup drive... I would suggest not keeping it powered or installed at all, for maximum security.

I always just hook up the SSD drive and not the HD Drive... Load Windows and drivers for your Mb and hardware... When Windows does all you want and all hardware works... Then I hook up my HD drive to transfer programs/files.

I always download all the latest drivers first for your MB, LAN, Audio, Video card, etc, On a USB stick, for quick fast Install.

ah ok, as I thought, not as easy as simply save to here or save to here, I will look into that more.
As for the spare back-up HDD with windows, is it easier to simply keep it disconnected and then if I want/need to use it, then disconnect the main SDD HDD combo and connect the spare HDD?

Or is it more simple/less problematic to have them all connected and from BIOS designate the storage HDD and the backup boot HDD?
