So I have a pretty nice home built computer, but I want to dual boot to start programming on linux. I am curious onto how much storage I should actually need.

For my windows boot I have a 2tb media storage plus 256gb ssd for OS & apps. Since I am only programming my theoretical linux boot I know I do not need media storage. So I am going to buy an ssd but idk how big I should get, 256gb or 128gb? This is for like matlab, java, python...thats it

A 128 should be more than enough. Another option would be to use some of the 256 SSD or 2TB HDD. If you can spare some room on one of those you won't need another drive at all.
