onboard Ethernet connection destroyed?

I've been recently having a problem with the Ethernet connection on my computer, but I'm not sure what's wrong with it, or if it's fixable.

Here are the details:
The orange light on the port is always on, unless I unplug or switch off the back of the computer. I haven't seen the green light flash at all since the problem began.

The Ethernet port still works... selectively. The only way that the Ethernet port will work is when I unplug or switch off my computer long enough to turn off the Orange light on the port, and it will work until I restart or shut my computer down again.

When I restart my computer, I cannot connect to the internet unless I shut down my computer and unplug or switch off the back switch for a few seconds, and even then, it'll only work until I restart or shut down my computer again.

So my question is, is there a way to fix this?

I'm having a hard time following when in the process you say it "works." Are you saying that it only works when your computer is off? If so, I don't possibly see how anything would work, if the computer is off, it's off. Also, what are you classifying as "works?" Is it simply just looking at what color the lights are flashing, or are you actually using your computer to see if you can get online?

Hi Maike.

Have you tried using another cable? It sounds like it could be an intermittent cable fault that's conveniently timing itself to present as another problem.

If you have tried that, try re-installing your network driver. If you give me the make/model of your card or pc, I can find a link to the driver for you.
As weclark says, what do you classify as working? can you access the internet after your initial unplug/replug after booting? Or are you only going off lights?
