So I am thinking about upgrading my old Hp Pavilion a6417c with a new GT 610. I have read a lot of debates on whether a GT 610 really does work on a 250 watt psu. I could not really tell one way or the other with all the debates going on. So I came here, the Ultimate PC Hardware website. So yeaah does a GT 610 really work on a 250 watt psu? My Hp computer does have a 250 watt psu, but it is made by a company named Bestec. Here are info's on the side of the psu when I opened up my Hp Pavilion.

Bestec
Model: ATX-250-12Z
INPUT: 100-127V~6A, 200-240V~3A 50/60Hz
BST ATX 250-12Z D7R

OUTPUT 250 W MAX

+5V & +3.3V 165W MAX. +5V % +12V 218 MAX.

I also want to know if PCI-Express 2.0 is backwards compatible with PCI-Express 1.0. Please reply quick as I am planning to buy a Galaxy GT 610 2GB DDR3.

To answer your questions-

Yes, the card should work with that PSU. It's not a great PSU but the 610 has a fairly low power draw. Yes, PCI 2.0 is backwards compatible with PCI 1.0.

The concerns by other posters are still valid- it's not a good gaming card at all but if that's your budget then that's your budget.
Waste of money anyway, assuming you are gaming. It wont do anything integrated graphics wont, just fork out the extra for a 7750 or 6670 and get a card thats actually usable.

But generally, if a card doesn't have PCIe power connections and only takes power from the motherboards slot, you are fine on a low wattage PSU.

Okay so here is my story, I already have a gaming computer armed with a GTX 660 & an i7-3770 w/ 16 GB @ 1600 MHz. I really do not want to get a new psu for my HP Pavilion. All I want to do is get a low end gpu enough to LAN party with some games when my friends come to my house.

Yes I agree the 610 doesnt add much performance, a HD 6670 (low profile version) would be much better but its risky still, as you have a 65 W CPU, then the extras HDD etc, then you include a GPU that could take up to 115Wish (so its near max of your PSU and its not a good idea get near the max)
Also a HD 6570 low profile might be better then HD 6670 in terms of power required

It's what low end cards like these are intended for, people that have prebuilt PC's with crappy PSU's. Anything 7750 or under is fine.

FINALLY SOMEONE FINALLY ANSWERS! Sorry for caps lock. Okay, but can you recommend a card that can run well on my HP Pavilion, but costs the same as a GT 610.

Is it really not any better than my on-board gpu? That is really hard to believe. Okay then tell me something that will increase my performance a little better than before, but still will run on my 250 watt psu. As I also stated before I will not be upgrading my psu.
