Do you need to use the heatsink fan that comes w/ processor?

Currently interested in buying a Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition 3.33 GHz Six Core Processor since it's the best CPU my MB can handle.

I'm only able to find it used on ebay and it doesn't come with it's original heatsink fan. Can I use the CPU cooler my comp already has or do I have to use the Intel one that comes in the original packing?

  1. As long as the one you already have fits the motherboard and can handle the heat output of the processor, you can use it.

No absolutely not, you can use any CPU cooler that supports socket LGA 1366. And with a powerful CPU like that I would recommend like a Coolermaster EVO 212, affordable and has great performance.
