I was looking at various Intel i5 processors and I'm confused about what makes a certain CPU better than another. I'll be using my computer mostly for gaming, and I was going to have a dual monitor set up so I'm not sure how that factors in. Any helpful information/suggestions are appreciated.

Amount of cores, frequency and whether you can overclock it or now. If you're into Intel, just gaming and have no intention of overclocking. Go for the i5 4670, highest clocked frequency out of the i5.

I myself was gonna get an AMD 8 core but was told it will not be enough for a high end graphic cards like GTX 780 or 780 Ti and considering SLI after a year or two. So I went for Intel for better per core performance.

If you dont plan to over clock. Look at the Haswell i5's

If you do plan to overclock look at the Ivy Bridge i5's

And you can also go for AMD 8320, 8350, 6300. To throw out some more options if you want

For start, why don't you pull out all recent reviews of Intel Core and AMD FX processors from this web site? Also take a look at the gaming CPU suggestions article. What makes a CPU suitable for gaming is hard benchmark data with real games.
